Addis Ababa University (AAU), which was established in 1950 as the University College of Addis Ababa (UCAA), is the oldest and the largest higher learning and research institution in Ethiopia. It has been the leading center in teaching-learning, research, and community services.
From the inaugural intake of 33 students in 1950, the figure has now reached over 34,000 students. The dramatic rise in student numbers has led to a corresponding growth in faculty and staff figures and AAU now has over 8,500 employees. The University runs over 65 undergraduate and 350 graduate programs.
In recent years, the University has been undertaking various reform measures to cope with and respond to the fast-changing national and international educational dynamics. As the nation’s flagship institution, Addis Ababa University encompasses 7 Colleges, 7 Institutes and 1 School of Law. Together, these academic units drive both teaching and research, across a wide spectrum of disciplines.
