The SickKids Caribbean Initiative:
Twinning to improve treatment of paediatric cancer and blood disorders in Barbados

University of Toronto

Cancer is the leading cause of disease-related death in Caribbean children, with rates of treatment complication and therapy abandonment significantly greater than in most high-income countries. Established in 2013, the SickKids Caribbean Initiative is a twinning partnership between the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto and healthcare stakeholders in the six Caribbean partner countries, designed to improve the outcomes and quality of life for children with cancer and blood disorders living in this region. This case study will explore the SickKids Caribbean Initiative’s delivery of healthcare in the Caribbean region.
